Title: Neuro-motor speech impairment: Theory-based approaches to assessment and treatment
Abstract:
This lecture has two parts. The first part deals with apraxia of speech (AOS). I will present a theoretical approach towards understanding the architecture of speech motor plans based on data from patients with AOS. The proposed model has implications for the assessment, differential diagnosis, and treatment of this disorder.
The second part deals with dysarthria. I will briefly motivate our theoretical understanding of the dysarthrias as impairments of vocal tract motor control specifically for speaking, and then embark on assessment methods for functional and for communicative aspects of dysarthria.
