Business trip requests must be submitted at least two weeks before departure. The request must include an invitation letter or program and be forwarded to the Dean’s office for examination and approval. You are welcome to also use the Dean's Office checklists as a guide.
The preclusive period for claiming reimbursement of costs is 6 months. The period begins on the day after the end of the business trip. As compensation for additional expenses for meals, business travellers receive a daily allowance for all domestic business trips, the amount of which is measured in accordance with the provisions of the Income Tax Act. Travel and flight costs: Class 1 train journeys may only be booked if the train journey itself takes at least 2 hours (excluding transport time from the main departure point). Otherwise, only journeys in 2nd class will be reimbursed. For flights, bookings of business flights of 6 hours or more are covered. Overnight allowances can only be granted for necessary overnight stays
For support, you can contact the Campus Management Hotline at cm‐hotline@fu‐berlin.de, and you can also call during the office hours, specified on the website. A tutorial video with all essential information about Campus Management can be found here. For questions related to Blackboard, feel free to contact CeDiS Support by email. Generally, students' active and regular participation have to be confirmed (students are not allowed to miss more than four sessions), and grades must be recorded (from 1.0 to 5.0).
Student Initiative and Caledonian Café
Like many other departments at Freie Universität Berlin, we also have a student initiative (Fachschaftsinitiative, FSI) that serves as a forum for the opinions of students in English Philology. Among other things, it represents student interests in committees and commissions, makes suggestions to improve teaching and curricula, and works for a pleasant atmosphere at the department. For these purposes, or simply to have a chat, they meet at the Caledonian Café (meeting times are posted in the café or on the notice board). Every student, no matter how recent their arrival, is welcome and will soon be flooded with party organization and other heavy duties. Anyone who, for this reason, would like to remain incognito at first can start by sending an email.
If you need assistance to access drives in the department or to connect to the internal printer/copier, please contact the IT support team of the Department of Philosophy and Humanities (IT Hotline: 030-838-72404, it@philgeist.fu‐berlin.de). Our printer/copier is located in room JK 29/232 along with detailed instructions. If you wish to access the Wi-Fi of Freie Universität, a detailed description can be found here.
Students can usually print out their performance records through Campus Management. However, some students may not be able to register directly in CM (affiliated module students and some ERASMUS students), so you may need to issue an exam or participation certificate. These certificates can be submitted for stamping at any secretariat and then handed out to the students. If ERASMUS students are leaving before the end of the semester, the certificate can be sent through our colleagues in the International Student Mobility Department to be forwarded to the partner university. The certificate templates for teacher training students can be found here.
For questions, please contact our Office of Examination and Ms Monika Cheng.
The colleagues at the Dahlem School of Education can be found here.
At our user service ZEDAT, you can request the setup of your email account (ZEDAT lecturer account) upon presenting your ID card/contract. Generally, after signing your contract at the personnel administration, you will receive an email with all the necessary information. A signature from a superior is not required. Please note that setting up your email account may take a few days, so plan for possible delays in time. You can access Campus Management and Blackboard with the username and password provided to you. To access Blackboard (platform to provide learning materials for students) and Campus Management (management of grades for students), a brief self-registration for FU Berlin instructors with FU account data is required.
Further information can be found here.
At all canteen checkouts and coffee bars of studierendenWERK BERLIN, you can get your MensaCard for a deposit of 1.55 euros. The MensaCard can be recharged at the machines located at the entrance of the canteen, or you can use the so-called Autoload System, which directly debits from your bank account. If you wish to set up the latter, please contact the staff in the canteen.
If you are ill or unable to work, please inform your work area and the institute administration. A phone call before the start of work with an estimate of the duration is sufficient, but we recommend sending an additional email as well.
Since 1 January, 2023, employers are required to electronically retrieve sick leave data from health insurance providers. Employees must still inform Freie Universität Berlin about their illness but will no longer submit the sick leave certificate in paper form. The employer will request the data electronically from the insurance company. Employees with private health insurance or those who become ill abroad and need local treatment will still need to submit a paper certificate. On the first day of return to work, please report your health where you previously reported sick. By law, the personnel administration of Freie Universität is entitled to request a medical certificate from the first day of illness.
If you are interested in a doctoral or habilitation project in the department for English Didactics, please contact Prof. Heim or Prof. Sambanis to inquire whether a position is currently available. If the response is positive, please schedule an appointment for an interview and submit an exposé of your research project. Please make sure to note: explain in your exposé how it is relevant to English Didactics at Freie Universität Berlin and briefly outline how you intend to finance yourself during the qualification phase. A doctorate/habilitation in English Didactics is not necessarily linked to an employment position.
For inquiries about this subject, please contact our Office of Academic Affairs.
Employees of Freie Universität Berlin receive vacation with continued payment of their salary each calendar year. For the calculation and granting of vacation, special leave, or special vacation, the regulations according to tariff and law apply. The full vacation entitlement is first acquired after six months of employment (waiting time). The vacation for civil servants and employees working five days a week is 30 workdays per year. A work day is a calendar day on which, according to the roster or the customary procedure, employees have to work or would have to work. The exception are public holidays, for which no compensation is granted. If the distribution of working hours differs from five days a week, the vacation entitlement is lowered or raised accordingly. Unused vacation days cannot be used past the 30 September of the following year. Vacation for employees of all Academic Departments, Central Institutes, Central Facilities, and other organizational units is, depending on the allocation of duties, granted by the employee’s supervisor or the head of the organizational unit. Employees must apply for vacation in advance and cannot take vacation before approval. When in doubt, decisions are made by the responsible division of the personnel administration. Special leave requests are to be addressed to the responsible division of the personnel administration via the employee’s supervisor and the departmental administration. Vacation requests are submitted to the administration of the institute at least three days before the start of the vacation. The application form can be found here. Please note that the form must be downloaded in order to activate the signature bar.
