The BA programme English Philology focuses on the language, literature and cultures of the Anglophone world (outside North America).

The programme consists of practical language courses and disciplinary courses. The latter cover the four core areas of Linguistics, Literary Studies, Medieval Studies and Cultural Studies.

English Linguistics deals with the analysis and description of the structure of the English language, its historical development and the formation of its varieties as well as the general conditions, functions and forms of language in its social and communicative contexts in the light of current language and grammar theories.

Literary Studies are concerned with analysing and interpreting literary texts, their forms characteristics and contexts, and with reflecting on what makes texts ‘literary’. English Literary Studies focus on British and Irish texts since the 16th century and on texts from the colonial and post-colonial Anglophone world (excluding North America).

Medieval Studies in English Philology encompass the study of English and Scottish literature, culture and language of the Middle Ages. They deal with literary and cultural communication processes, the literary and linguistic characteristics of medieval English texts, the specific historical conditions of their production and reception, and the methods of describing and interpreting medieval English literature on the basis of current medievalist theories.

English Cultural Studies are concerned with Anglophone cultures in the past and present. This includes the analysis of how cultural meaning is created in different texts and media (including literature). In addition, the focus is on the construction of identities, hierarchies and power relations based on social categories such as gender, class, race, ethnicity and religion.

The 30 and 60 LP modules do not cover the entire subject of the degree programme (see course structure).
