Learning a language and learning the violin - which is easier?
Perhaps the most persistent claim about first language acquisition is that it happens quickly and effortlessly. As such, L1 acquisition contrasts starkly with other - and far more laborious - learning processes, such as adult L2 acquisition, or the famously difficult task of learning to play a musical instrument. In this talk I, will try to gauge the relation between this claim and reality.
