Zinik is in his fifties. He has a limp. He is recently divorced. He has lost all his money in the recent financial crash. And now he has to go to Shanghai for the first time in his life, on a business trip.

 

This is all we knew of Zinik, before we began a seminar called A Tentative Experiment to Form a

Literary Collective at the Freie Universität, Berlin — in June and July 2011.

 

This book represents what happened next.

Am 14. Juli 2011 erschien mit The Book of Zinik—A Collective Experiment die dritte Veröffentlichung der Edition AVL Berlin. Im Rahmen ihrer Tätigkeit als Samuel Fischer Gastprofessoren für Literatur veranstalteten Adam Thirlwell und Daniel Kehlmann ein Seminar zum Thema Kollektive Autorschaft — »Tentative Experiment to Form a Literary Collective«. Dabei schrieben die Seminarteilnehmer unter anderem selbst kollektiv an einem Roman, der nun als Kollaboration von 35 Autoren, zwei Herausgebern, Lektoren und Vor- bzw. Nachwortschreibern, einer Korrektorin, eines Setzers, eines Druckers und eines Buchbinders vorliegt, The Book of Zinik—A Collective Experiment. Ausgangspunkt waren fünf einfache Sätze, der Rest war unvorhersehbar: »Zinik is in his fifties. He has a limp. He is recently divorced. He has lost all his money in the recent financial crash. And now he has to go to Shanghai for the first time in his life, on a business trip.« Am 9. Juli wurde der Text geschrieben und redigiert, am 10. Juli gesetzt, am 11. Juli gedruckt, am 13. Juli zum Buch gebunden und am 14. Juli ausgeliefert und erstmalig vorgestellt: The Book of Zinik—A Collective Experiment.
