"Notational references of medial forming and transmission in creative processes of music. Considerations to the problematic of medial-critical draft-research in electroacoustic music and computer music."

Draft

Heterogeneous materials leave their marks in the creative process of contemporary composing and notation. These marks become a notational condition for the creative processes.

With its focus on electroacoustic music, the dissertation will elaborate a model that characterises the peculiarity of different representations, their notational materialisations as well as their effect on the artistic creation.

For this analytic approach, the compositional draft – prior to the final score – is the first indication of an artistic process. On a conceptual and textual level, dialectics of the mainly heterogeneous materials arise. Processes of harmonisation, a first approach, rigidity in comparison to other notational materials, or processes of merging diffluence of single elements appear and point to potential future representations. At this creative interface, the role of imageries from different sources, for instance, may become a formative and thus questionable element. At this point it becomes evident, which characteristics of the source material yield to the artistic concept, or in which way others are maintained or change the artistic concept.

Such a multi-dimensional approach focuses on the creative interfaces of the compositional process, the importance of the imageries and graphics at these interfaces, the heterogeneity as well as the specificities of the material and their relevance for the genesis of the work.

This analytical approach allows the exploration of fundamental facts about the artistic genesis and the forming processes of notational iconicity from a musical context / perspective, and to introduce them to the mainly text- and image-based interdisciplinary discourse. The interaction of diverse materials and their features includes a process of intermediation, which contours medial conditions for the forming genesis of scripture and image; it can also appear as a witness for artistic creation, which is formed by knowledge and intuition. Therefore, considerations from philology and art-theory will be incorporated in a model. Finally, the dissertation will put forth a model for the musical draft research from a media-critical perspective.
