The Basque language
The Basque language is a European minority language with about 800,000 speakers in the north of Spain and south of France, and a not easily ascertainable number of speakers in the diaspora (especially in the USA, Paris and several Latin American cities). The origin of the Basque language is still unclear. It is possible that the language was spoken in Western Europe before any Indo-European settlement took place. This would make Basque the only surviving pre-Indo-European language in Western Europe.
The Lectureship for Basque language and culture at Freie Universität Berlin
The Lectureship for Basque was established at Freie Universität Berlin in November 2004 with financial support from the Basque government, the Department of Philosophy and Humanities of Freie Universität Berlin, and the Institute for Romance Philology of Freie Universität Berlin. Since then, Basque language courses and classes on Basque linguistics, culture, history and regional studies have been held at the Freie Universität Berlin every semester.
All courses are held with the support of the Etxepare Basque Institute. Attendance is free and participants are always welcome. The Basque courses can be credited for various study programs at the Institute of Romance Philology and at the Interdisciplinary Center European Languages (Master "Linguistics" and Bachelor "Language and Society").
