Federal Ministry of Education and Research / Bundesministerium für Bildung und Forschung (BMBF)
Funded by the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF), the International Research Center “Interweaving Performance Cultures” (board of directors: Prof. Dr. Dr. h.c. Erika Fischer-Lichte, Prof. Dr. Gabriele Brandstetter, and Prof. Dr. Matthias Warstat) is linked to the Institute for Theater Studies and is part of the Freie Universität Berlin. The Research Center closely collaborates with Berlin's most innovative theaters, its leading spaces for dance and the arts, as well as with various academic institutions.
The International Research Center “Interweaving Performance Cultures” was founded at Freie Universität Berlin in August 2008 with the aim of opening up a completely new field of research: processes of interweaving performance cultures. Initially funded by the Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF), the Center is one of ten “Käte Hamburger Collegia” in Germany. Between 2008-2018 internationally renowned scholars—cultural theorists, theatre experts and researchers on performance coming from more than thirty different countries from all five continents—were invited to work as Fellows on new and emerging forms of interweaving. In cooperation with former Fellows and guests, the Center is currently working on the publishing of a multi-volume series on specific aspects of the interweaving of performance cultures. Some of the titles that we are working on include Theatrical Speech Acts, Generating Knowledge, Dramaturgies of Interweaving Performance Cultures, and Handbook on performance-related concepts in non-European Languages.
