Information about German and English Language Requirements of the MA in Critical Dance Studies:

Within 2024, the program has transitioned its language requirements. Level C1 English and B2 German are required. 

Qualifications that prove level C1 English:

1. Higher Education Entrance Qualification with English as the primary language of instruction (e.g., high school diploma, A-levels, IB).
2. German Abitur: Written Abitur examination in English with at least 12 points (advanced level/major course).
3. Language Certificates (valid for 3 years)

• IELTS (Academic) (including online): Overall score of at least 7.0, with at least 6.0 in writing.
• TOEFL Internet-based Test (iBT) or TOEFL iBT Special Home Edition: Overall score of at least 100, with at least 25 in writing.
• Cambridge Qualifications: C1 Advanced (formerly CAE) or C2 Proficiency (formerly CPE): Overall score of at least 180, with at least 180 in writing.
•  UNIcert® III.o PTE Academic (including online): Overall score of at least 76, with at least 76 in writing.

4. University Degree with English as the primary language of instruction – to be demonstrated by:

• An indication of English as the language of instruction on the Diploma Supplement, or
•  A certificate from the university.

Additionally, students pursuing their Bachelor's degree at Freie Universität (FU) can take our English courses in the ABV (General Professional Skills) area. The course "Advanced/Upper Intermediate English 2 for Academic Professions" leads to a C1 level and also serves as proof of language proficiency.

The following proofs of B2 within the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages in German language are accepted:

• DSH-1
• TestDaF with at least level 3 in all four parts
• B2 CEFR certificate with grades from a language school
• language evaluation test, which attests skills at level B2 CEFR
• proof of attendance for C1 language course (ongoing or completed course)

Proof of German language skills must be uploaded to the uni-assist application portal by the application deadline.

Learning German:

Check out the German as a Foreign Language department of the Language Centre. The Language Center of Freie Universität Berlin offers pre-semester courses and semester-long language courses for students of Freie Universität Berlin. There are no DSH preparation courses. All applicants can use the Centre for Independent Language Learning for individual exam preparation.
